Books That Mattered
I was never, and currently, am not an avid
reader but that's not to say I hate reading. Making the time to sit
down and just read is not easy. Watch you for a future post about my undoubtable opinion about the difference between "making time" and "having time".
We have such busy lives, yet winding down to simply read never seems to be a top priority, and that's totally normal honestly. I like to think I'm a "serial reader"; If I find a book interesting, I’ll grasp at any opportunity to stop what I’m doing to read a couple chapters. I practically won’t put it down until it’s finished. But once it is finished, I loose all interest in reading whatsoever and won’t touch another book for months. But after a couple months pass and I walk around Chapters on a Saturday afternoon, I find a couple books with interesting synopses, the cycle begins again. That is exactly the case with the books I've listed below. In my young life, I've read many books for both school and leisure, but only a couple have stuck with me; These are my go-to recommendations for anyone.

You'll notice there's no specific genre I gravitate
towards, like Romance or Mystery, but overall I like the fiction-drama-thought provoking (with a little
romance)-novel. Trying to steer clear from the stereotypical high school teen fiction or any teen fiction, especially anything involving werewolves and vampires. Hopefully these books can inspire you, or at least now you'll have a longer list of "to-Read"s for this year!

My top 5 Books (...so far)
The Future of Us by Jay Asher and
Caroline Macker
This book just opened my mind to the idea
and consequences of social media, but it wasn’t until very later (aka the last
couple months) that it all made sense. Honestly, I think I’ll pick up this book
again to refresh my memory but, the fact that I red this in high school for fun
should be proof enough that it was good. It stands out in my mind because of the formatting chosen by the authors. The authors do what seems to be write one chapter each, one after the other. Without spoiling anything, it's a fascinating dialogue and one that I'd never seen in any novel previous to reading this one.
The Five People You Meet In Heaven By
Mitch Albom
Am absolute classic. The sweetest book you’ll
ever read. Technically this was for a class assignment but I’m so glad I picked
this one up from the list of options I was given. I need to read this again, but knowing I loved it in High School should mean a lot coming from a girl who hated
being forced to read “classics”. There was always something about
“classic” novels that turned me away, I think because I assumed, they would be
boring. I still sometimes have that narrow minded view sometimes, but I'm trying to get better with it. This novel explores the journey into the after-life of one man who [not so SPOILER] died. How the people he meets on his way to heaven help him understand how/why he died. This an amazing story. I've also herd many good things about the novel, by the same author, "Tuesday's with Morrie". I'm sure this one is also just as amazing since it skyrocketed Albom's career. So check out both!
Opening Belle by Maureen Sherry
This story is definitely one that inspired
me, and kicked off a girl-boss binge of other books following it. From the
business-woman protagonist in the other fiction novel I read in right after this one, Sherry's won the cake! Not to spoil anything but it does set during the 2008 US
financial crisis, and not-knowing much about that era, being so young at the time, I was really interested to learn all about it. I was Googling and
watching YouTube videos about the rise and fall of the economy in the US to fully understand the struggles the main character was going through. I was really
interested in doing my research to piggy-back on the story, and that was a first for me. I also believe that having a woman’s perspective on working in New York at the time was very refreshing. It was fascinating trying to decode the meanings of each interaction and relationship. The story went much deeper than a woman in stocks struggling to keep her family afloat during the worst crisis in US history at the time. It forces you to also look at how much of our lives are spent trying to make the people we don't care about, jealous about the lives we don't even have. Trust me, it will all make more sense if you read the book... and you should!!
I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai
Needless to say, everyone knows her, and if
you don’t, you need to read this book. An inspiration not only to young girls,
but men alike and anyone who is told they cannot do something based on their
religion, age, skin colour or societal class. That is all I need to say about this books. Great read. You won’t regret
spending the 20$ I promise.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Finally a psychological thriller that isn't riddled with murders, or is it... This novel is great, so great that it was adapted into a movie a couple of years ago. Like every other book to on-screen adaptation, the book was much better. The narration is great and makes you hate and love all characters involved at the same time. Crazy plot twists after every chapter, and not plot holes which is always a bonus with a great book! I mean there isn't much to say here to hype the story without spoiling anything. A woman goes missing, her husband is the number 1 suspect, and the story takes shape from there. If you enjoy cliffhangers after every chapter, but not at the end of the book, this one is perfect! The ending leaves you in that state of deep thought, which personally make those my favourite books, and hence why this one rounds up my list.
That pretty much rounds up the books that really had an impact on me in my 21 years of life. Surely there are other books I've read that I loved, and there will be more. I hope to keep findings the ones that keep me excited about reading. Currently, I have a lot of lonely books on my bookshelve to read, but I am the kind of person that needs to read at least 50-100 pages before really being invested, so, we'll see how it goes. I'll keep you posted, so keep an eye out!
So here is a quick list of the novels that I've already bought with the assumption I will love (but we'll see how that turns out). Let me know if you've read any of these, if you liked them, or if you have any other recommendations!
